The philosophy of degrowth argues that infinite growth on a finite planet is ecologically unsustainable and socially unjust. Degrowth promotes a reorientation of the economy toward sufficiency and ecological limits. This shift can occur through policies like work-time reduction, wealth redistribution, and limits on finite resource extraction. Degrowth is closely associated with the environmental and so-called “steady-state” economics of the American economist Prof. Herman Daly (1938–2022) and his mentor, the Romanian–American economist Prof. Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen (1906–1994). Both men drew upon the stationary state concept originated by John Stuart Mill (1806–1873). Imagine a region where a degrowth-oriented policy package replaces what are essentially car subsidies (paying for the likes of parking garages and traffic law enforcement) with public transport investments. This policy leads to a substantial drop in urban emissions, which consequently results in improved air quality over the next several years.
