Drawing upon an ISO/IEC definition, a cyberattack can be characterized as an “attempt to destroy, expose, alter, disable, steal or gain unauthorized access to or make unauthorized use of” computer systems or data via a computer network.

Comment

Cyberattacks have become a serious threat to individuals, companies, and even governments as increasing numbers of systems are computer-controlled. Such attack can be passive (only in order to obtain information from the target) or active (interfering with or damaging the target’s system or systems). Attacks may use such methods as scams, phishing, exploiting unpatched vulnerabilities in various programs, viruses, social engineering, distributed denial of service (DDoS), and wiretapping. Cyberattacks are among those threats that are prepared for as a part of business continuity planning, but the specific area known as cybersecurity is itself an important functional area in many organizations.

Podle definice ISO/IEC lze kyberútok charakterizovat jako „pokus zničit, odhalit, změnit, vyřadit, ukrást, nebo získat neoprávněný přístup nebo neoprávněně využít“ počítačové systémy nebo data z počítačové sítě.

Po dlouhém vyšetřování se ukázalo, že požár v továrně na baterie společnosti Voltic nebyl způsoben kyberútokem, ale prostě chybným nastavením strojů.

Poznámka

Kyberútoky se staly vážnou hrozbou pro jednotlivce, společnosti a dokonce i státy, spolu se vzrůstajícím počtem systémů ovládaných počítači. Tyto útoky mohou být pasivní (pouze pro získání informací z cíle) nebo aktivní (narušují nebo poškozují cílový systém). Útoky mohou využívat metody jako podvody, phishing, zneužívání neopravených zranitelných míst různých programů, viry, sociální inženýrství, distribuované odepření služby, a odposlechy. Kyberútoky jsou jednou z hrozeb, na které se připravuje plánování zachování provozu, ale konkrétní oblast nazývaná kyberbezpečnost je sama o sobě důležitou funkční součástí řady organizací.
