Design for disassembly is a circular economy strategy to avoid manufacturers’ developing products that either cannot be taken apart or only with great difficulty can be disassembled at the ends of their life cycles. This enables manufacturers to reduce the products’ life cycle environmental impacts because the goods are easier to repair, maintain, and upgrade. For example, a modular laptop could be disassembled using just one screwdriver. This makes the laptop last longer because the components are easy to replace and upgrade while also allowing for much greater material recovery. The direct opposite can be seen in a laptop put together using chemical glues and complex plastics, which make recycling nearly impossible and leads to more products ending up in a landfill.

Demontovatelnost spadá mezi strategie cirkulární ekonomiky, které jsou v rozporu s výrobci, kteří vyvíjejí produkty, které nelze nebo lze jen velmi obtížně rozebrat na konci jejich životního cyklu. Nejen to, ale také umožňuje výrobcům snížit dopady produktů na životní prostředí během jejich životního cyklu, protože se snadněji opravují, udržují a modernizují. Například modulární notebook lze rozebrat pomocí jediného šroubováku. Díky tomu má notebook delší životnost, protože jeho součásti lze snadno vyměnit a modernizovat, a umožňuje mnohem lepší zpětné získávání materiálů. Přímým opakem by byl notebook sestavený z chemických lepidel a složitých plastů, který by byl téměř nerecyklovatelný a vedl by k tomu, že by více produktů skončilo na skládce.
